When I started working on my vocal technique with Diana, I had set out wanting two specific things:  1) I wanted to expand my vocal range; and 2) I wanted to sing with more power without my voice giving out after a song two.  After 20 hours, I have achieved both of those things.  I can hit higher notes, ones that I remember having difficulty achieving previously.  The strength of my voice has also significantly improved.  As I’m putting Diana’s amazing technique into muscle memory, I’m achieving greater vocal power and the sound I produce is directed and clear.  On top of these things, and much to my satisfaction, the quality of my voice has also greatly improved.  I continue to receive compliments on my singing and my confidence level has greatly increased.  Long story short, what Diana has delivered for me is beyond my expectations and I look forward to continuing to work with her.  I’m excited to see what the next level in my vocal ability will look like.

When I attended the first introductory session and the first lesson with Diana, I really didn’t know what to expect.  I had read many reviews and testimonials but I didn’t really know much about her technique besides that it was innovative.  I wasn’t sure what the title “Vocal Science” had to do with anything.

I was first struck with Diana’s straightforward manner.  She tells it like it is.  I appreciate people who are direct.  Constructive criticism is the only way to really learn and improve.  She had a clear grasp of my potential and where I might be able to take my voice.  I’ve never had any aspirations to turn my singing into something on a professional level, but I appreciated that her lessons were measured (I wasn’t going to be taking endless lessons for years) and defined (we were going to go from A to B).

When we began the exercises, I started to get a feel for what her technique was about.  It was quite different from what my limited foray into voice lessons had taught me.  Diana’s method made sense from a scientific and mathematical standpoint; for example, tying the diaphragm and the breath to the facial muscles, bypassing the strain on the vocal chords.  Also, her visualization of circles of sound, to me, seemed set on a mathematical grid, an x-y axis, with the height and breadth defining the sound.  Her technique also made sense to me from a physical level — the athletic posture to enhance breathing, not the traditional stance of vocal instruction emphasizing the extension of the diaphragm.  Being a math teacher and someone always interested and involved in fitness, all of this appealed to me.

While the system seem elegant and straightforward, putting it into practice was something else entirely.  It sounded easy, but was ever so hard to implement.  It’s like superimposing puzzle pieces to allow one small beam of light to pass through.  It’s the alignment of breath, of musculature, of sound, of position.  With Diana’s direction, if you are able to lock all of those things down, you can definitely hear an immediate effect.  It’s like turning on a switch.  Her exercises are an attempt to engrain all of these elements into muscle memory so that it eventually becomes second nature as a singer (or speaker), and something that a speaker/singer can apply to any vocal scenario/song.

Friday, May 25, 2018

It was at this session when I realized the amount of work involved in this process.  Yes, Diana is the professional and magic does happen, but it’s not with putting your share of hard work and persistence into the process.  It’s often very humbling.  It’s often frustrating.  Ultimately; however, when you’re able to get the sound that Diana is after, it’s very satisfying.  The day after this session (on Saturday), I attended a party at a friend’s place.  Many of my friends are musicians and we often jam and sing together.  I sang a number of songs and I felt confident and my voice felt strong.  My friends complimented me on my singing, but it was my husband who defined the difference in my voice.  He said my confidence and my clarity had improved.  Although I hadn’t really been thinking about the techniques I had worked on with Diana apart from breathing posture, I think, at some level, I was already building her techniques into my subconscious.

Sunday, May 27, 2018

As my grasp of the facial positions and postures increases, Diana raises the bar in terms of her expectations, as all good teachers do.  She begins to zero in and listen more closely (if that’s possible for her as she can hear the smallest of breaths).  She demands more precision and that’s exactly the direction in which I’m hoping to go.  The number of sessions together are short, and so we need to define the process in as much detail and with as much perfection as possible.  It’s amazing to me that much of our lesson involves just my speaking voice when I’ve come to her for vocal singing lessons.  The results speak for themselves, though.  As they say, you can’t learn to run until you know how to walk.  It’s not about learning how to sing.  It’s about building the blocks that allow for the optimal sound with the least amount of strain on your vocal chords.

Wednesday, May 30, 2018

Today’s lesson was also eye-opening.  At the end of our session, we began to get into more of the singing techniques and applying them to what I’ve already learned in terms of producing sound effectively.  Diana played a recording of a 3-part singing practice.  I managed to get through the first part and look forward to practicing this again next session.  She also played the other parts for me so that I could understand what was coming next.  The practice was well-constructed in that it kept building in complexity and covered many of the vocal scenarios one might experience in a song:  speeds, tonal changes, clarity – all of these were required as one progressed through the sequence.  I don’t know if I could ever complete this practice – it becomes very advanced – but I consider it a challenge to get as far as I possibly can.  I’m confident that with Diana’s guidance, I’ll do just that.

Wednesday Aug. 24, 2016 – Day 1

I started my first session, of my 30 hour course, today with Diana and was filled with butterflies about what I was going to be doing and whether or not I could be successful.

I arrived at the house and was greeted with a smile and a hug, was brought into the studio and we chatted for a few minutes getting to know each other, but this was also a time for Diana to assess my situation.

Diana saw right from the beginning that I dropped all of my words too low into my throat and didn’t breathe properly while speaking.

We began with some diction exercises, and I will be honest in saying it sounds much easier than it is in actuality to produce the sounds correctly after 40 years of speaking incorrectly.

Diana was very encouraging in saying that what mistakes I habitually was doing were normal and not just made by me, but most clients with my same vocal issues.

I left this evening both hopeful and anxious as to whether I would actually be successful in learning this. I have seven more days and plan to work hard and do my best, but I am excited also that this is going to be so beneficial.

I work for a cruise line, teaching classes to guests for 6+ hours per day/7 days a week for 4 months at a time.  This vocal repair training is critical to my career if I wish to be able to continue doing what I love.

Thursday August 25, 2016 – Day 2

We continued our exercises today and I feel a bit like a dunce. But I’m not a quitter and I do want to succeed.  We changed the technique a bit for how I stand and place my hands while practicing, to produce a more consistently correct sound. I can’t yet seem to hear the difference between correct and incorrect sound placement and resonance yet, but again I am retraining decades of incorrect habits.  I’m praying for a mental breakthrough to happen.  Even in the midst of my own mental frustration Diana has been very encouraging and supportive in assuring me we are learning a process that will translate to real life after I learn the formula that will be the building blocks for all other speech.

Friday and Saturday August 26-27, 2016 – Days 3 & 4

We continued our sessions and in between sessions took some time to enjoy some different venues in the city. It’s nice to play a little in the midst of working hard.

I’m feeling muscles in my face now I never felt before and I am producing correct sounds I think about 50% of the time now.

Diana has me reading a few commercial scripts to practice the drills we’ve been doing and one of the scripts she says others don’t begin in their training sessions.   So,  I’ve been encouraged that while I’m being really hard on my own self,  at this number of training hours I am actually progressing well.

Sunday August 28, 2016 – Day 5

Today I finally had a mental breakthrough after I finished my last session. Not a breakdown, haha, a breakthrough in what I’m supposed to do to produce the sounds correctly. Diana said that the basic sounds from our warm up diction exercises translate to all other words and I am now hearing in my head the drills and how I made those particular sounds, and I am starting to now produce those same sounds in different and new words more consistently. When she says “on top, on top” I have to speak the words a certain way that finally clicked in my head. I haven’t perfected it yet, but I do now get the concept. This is a major breakthrough!!  I appreciate so much the professionalism and understanding that Diana has, after so many years of honing her craft, that she is able to see when I don’t understand and change her way of explaining to better fit my learning style.  She reads body language and tone very well to understand what I’m thinking before I even know what I’m thinking.  That has been very beneficial in this whole process.  She also knows by observation when I’m needing a break and we lapse then into conversation.  Even this is part of the process as she is getting me to relax or casually observing my progress in normal speech compared to the lessons.

Monday August 29, 2016 – Day 6

Diana had an analogy today that I loved. She said that what she is doing is like teaching me to drive. Just like in driver’s Ed, I have to learn the skills from the instructor and practice them correctly to pass the test. Once I pass the test I then have to go out on the road and learn to drive. What does that mean? She can teach me the technique and I can pass her course, but then it is up to me to keep working it and finessing it until I no longer have to think about the technique consciously. Like a new driver who thinks about “turn your head, the brake is this pedal, place your hands at 10:00 and 2:00” but eventually driving becomes more subconscious, so also will this new technique become more subconscious.  It is important to have the right teacher and then that teacher must equip the student to have the confidence to take to the road without them and still drive correctly.  I’ve had others make suggestions that didn’t help, but finally I’m seeing in my own self that when I do it the way she instructs that my throat feels better and the sound is much more pleasant when I’m speaking.  It does feel a bit unnatural still, but again after so many years of bad habits, it takes awhile to retrain the brain.

Tuesday August 30, 2016 – Day 7

After the breakthrough I had the other day, I arrived today and finally flew through the warm up exercises in the first session and was able to do very well on the first script in record time for me. We video taped me after that session and I really did sound so much better than when I arrived last Wednesday!! I only wish now I had another 20 hours to keep going to really entrench it in my subconscious. I don’t want to just lift my voice, which is happening very nicely, I want to work on my pacing and intonation to have an interesting voice. I love theater and acting and would actually enjoy doing voiceover work. But that is an entirely different training course separate from the vocal repair course, as it is a more advanced level.

Diana, her assistant Jamie, and I had a great laugh tonight as we read the scripts in different accents. I started it, sounding more British than American for a phrase, and so then we started talking to each other in different accents and it was too funny.  There has been laughter and tears as we make strides forward this past week, but I am definitely so grateful I picked the right teacher to guide me in this process. Tomorrow is the last day and then I will have my license to drive. After that it’s up to me to keep driving until it is subconscious. I’ll be sad to go.

Wednesday August 31, 2016 – Day 8

We broke up my last day into three separate sessions, each was an hour and a half with breaks in between.  This has been a great process and experience, but after this number of days my body is starting to physically feel all the hard the work and I found I was quite tired last night during our second session.  So having shorter sessions today helped me to finish strong.  I have not only repaired my voice, but I have also seen toning in my leg muscles, my lungs have better capacity as I’ve learned to breathe properly, I know now that even when horribly congested (I seem to have taken on a mild cold) I can still use this wonderful new technique and speak normal “above” the congestion and produce clear sounds.  It’s truly amazing all the benefits this is bringing!

We video taped one more time today to have me pick up the pace and try to sound more colloquial, rather than scripted.  That was very helpful in trying to remember to breathe, speak “up” with each word of a phrase, have proper posture (never knew that my posture was so bad before, but I totally see and feel the difference now) and still talk naturally in a classroom setting.

Tomorrow I will fly to Venice to go back to work.  I will start right in on Friday night with my first class immediately getting to use what I’ve just learned.  I’m so thankful to have had the opportunity for this Vocal Repair course with Diana, it has saved my career.

Testimonial – Trisha B., Milwaukee, WI USA

Since 1997 my voice has been a key element in my career.  I began as an Outdoor Education Instructor and trained school aged children for over seven hours a day.  Starting 2006 I transitioned to working on a cruise ship, first as a kid’s club leader and now currently as a computer instructor.  I still use my voice as my primary occupational tool over 6 hours every day, for at least 8 months a year, 7 days a week.  All of this speaking has taken a huge toll on my vocal chords.  I’ve had pain in my voice for years and have noticed that my voice has dropped lower and lower over time.  I hear so many other people my age that also have a lower voice and assumed it was simply from age.  This isn’t true,  but I didn’t know that yet.

The constant pain and discomfort led me to search online for ways to help me with throat pain, vocal discomfort, proper speaking, etc.  Nothing was coming up that seemed truly helpful with those specific keywords.  Then I finally (should have started with this) prayed about it.  I know that God wants the best for me and that He has always guided me to the right solutions when I place my trust in Him and humbly ask for help.  Why do I waste so much time trying to do it my own way? I’ll never know, but in the end I did pray.  As soon as I finished asking what I needed to do in this circumstance, I typed into the search “Vocal Repair” and instantly was seeing this website with Diana Yampolsky and the unique approach she has for lifting the voice off the vocal chords.  YES! That made total sense to me.

I’m a skeptic when it comes to training courses and whether it’s legit or a scam, so I read every word on the entire site and read the testimonials of others and watched some other people’s videos of before and after sessions.  I was now convinced it was what I needed and I contacted Diana to inquire about whether or not she could help me with my particular condition.

Being at sea I had a unique dilemma…no access to the telephone and internet was way too slow for a Skype conversation, so she amazingly agreed to take me on as a student without having heard my voice, just conversing over email.  I guess that is very unusual, but I was so grateful that she agreed.  We planned out when I would be able to come and I began preparing flights, accommodations and all the other pieces necessary for travel to the Toronto area (as I live in Milwaukee, but after my training would be going right back to work on a ship sailing out of Venice).

The training was amazing.  It was hard, the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I’ve discovered muscles all over my body I never knew I had before, it’s that intense.  I felt like I was in boot camp at times, and yet I wouldn’t change a thing.  I am a very determined person and so when I was corrected for the umpteenth time for the same things I took it as a challenge to learn the technique properly and do it correctly, for me.  Diana knows that time is short, just 30 hours in my case, to retrain 40 years of incorrect habits, and so I had to focus and concentrate and assimilate what she was saying in a way that made sense to me.  And figure out how to keep doing it consistently in the future.

She gave an analogy regarding the training being like learning to drive.  As my instructor it is up to her to teach me proper habits and techniques so that I can pass the driving test and get my license.  After I have my license I have to continue using those techniques in order to drive subconsciously and well.  I can see how that translates to this training and vocal repair.  I’ve now learned the techniques for lifting my voice and it’s now up to me to implement it, and perfect it, so that I don’t have to consciously think about it while speaking.

Picking the right teacher is so important.  I have had other speech pathologist friends coach me before and some of what they said helped a bit, but they didn’t fix the problem. Mostly it was like just putting on some ointment and a Band-Aid to ease symptoms.  Diana’s technique allows healing and repair to happen for real.

I enjoyed getting to know Diana very much, her heart is so big.  She is very generous and giving, extremely professional too during our sessions.  She has had some recent personal tragedy and physically she was experiencing side effects of a huge amount of stress.  As miserable as she felt between sessions, during our time “on the clock” it didn’t seem to affect her at all…it was amazing to witness…and I told her how much I appreciated that absolute focus she gave me despite it all weighing on her emotionally and physically.

I am so thankful, grateful, blessed to have found Diana through the internet and to have had the amazing privilege of working with her.  I hope to have the opportunity in the future to continue working with her on more advanced techniques as she’s now piqued my interest in possibly pursuing voiceover work in the future.  I never would have thought that possible, but I’ve always had the desire to do that line of work and never had the validation that I would be fit for it, until now.  For right now though, I need to get back to work and teach cruise guests which mouse click to use!

Thank you Diana, Jamie and Chris for making my trip to Toronto an amazing and life-changing experience.

Blessings,

– Trisha B., Milwaukee, WI USA

Case Study

After 50 hours of Non-Surgical Voice Repair and Natural Treatment.

My voice problem started 5 years ago from when I was singing in my high school choir. I was overusing my voice and using it incorrectly. I stopped singing completely, and went to see medical professionals who diagnosed me with Muscle Tension Dysphonia and recommended speech therapy. After trying numerous speech therapy, it got to the point this year where I could barely talk, and very quiet and I had to quit my part-time job.

Nevertheless, the above-mentioned medical professional’s diagnoses ranged from depression with prescribed antidepressants, to Muscle Tension Dysphonia. One of the medical professionals suggested that my voice problem was a disability and that I could get a job that did not require speaking. After trying speech therapy, it got to the point this year where my voice was quiet and I could barely talk, and I had to use a whiteboard and pen as a crutch. As a person who has gone through a voice problem, I can say how its effect on areas of my life was unprecedented. So many people don’t understand or have never heard of voice problems, there is just not enough awareness of voice issues like mine.

We came across Vocal Science online and read all the testimonies on the web, then made an appointment to see Diana. She has an extremely good ear, and after hearing me on the phone for the first time assured that she would be able to help me.

Diana’s technique meant supporting my voice and lifting my voice off my vocal cords, which would allow my throat a chance to heal, as well as place less strain on the vocal cords which would essentially eradicate my problem as well as prevent future problems with my voice. Her program also included herbal supplements which helped heal my voice. I want people to know that patience and perseverance is important as at first I still experienced discomfort in my voice but after a while, it decreased. As the course progressed I found I was able to talk louder, more clearly and with less discomfort, which was also aided by the herbs.

Although it was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, and there were many obstacles along the way, I completed 50 hours with Diana because in the end it was worth it. In order to access Vocal Science, we had to travel halfway around the world to be able to see her, so hopefully, it will be available all around the world, including on our doorstep

in the future! I found Diana as a teacher tough, loud and one-of- a kind, but she could be a rock for what I know, because she knows the voice inside, and out. Although we focused on my speaking, I was so surprised that under Diana’s guidance I was able to sing some exercises as well as the song ‘Can’t Help Falling In Love’ by Elvis. I am so happy that even my singing has improved and I hope to continue developing my singing voice in the future.

Above all, I am so grateful to have my voice back and thankful we came across Vocal Science after I had exhausted all other options!

Its such a relief to have someone to go to if I have issues with my voice, as before I felt so alone and had no idea what to do, so many thanks.

– Elle

Case Study ( 14 hour in – vocal course duration).

Megan Stewart - Up and Coming Singer/Songwriter from Barrie, Ontario

Not only has this course been drastically helping my singing voice, Diana has made me realize many things about how I present myself in life in general. I never realized how much I mumbled before. My voice goes right to the ground, and I say “like” a lot. I speak through my throat/nose and it makes my voice disappear in a crowded room. No wonder some people see me as appearing unconfident, even though I have such belief for myself inside. It’s frustrating knowing I have a great singing voice, but couldn’t communicate that strongly before. After 2 hours into this course, I quickly realized I haven’t been singing properly – and that’s why!!

The last 4 years that I’ve been playing in bands, I have been singing at 20% of my potential. Everything I thought I knew about singing feels like a virus in my head that I must throw away. The technique wasn’t there. I would have never figured out proper technique by myself. Not through any 20-minute free YouTube video, or reading a book, taking one vocal lesson from some Joe blow, or trying to take an easy way out.

What I need is vocal instruction, someone correcting me and explaining word for word what I did wrong, and how to fix it. Diana literally drills these instructions into my head. She’s a tough Russian lady but I admire her strength and zero tolerance for bad technique. She’s defiantly making my skin toughen up. Now that we’ve had a few sessions, I feel my muscles building where they should be with proper technique. I must tighten my lower abdomen, expand my upper rib cage, and use my mouth as an amplifier, and that’s just the surface. Its sounds easy, but its very difficult to get there. I am at a point where I can now tell if I’m hitting the note properly or not, and am able to correct myself.

However, I still have a very far way to go. I can hit the note properly, but it’s difficult to sing even a line of a song properly without going back to my old technique. The moment I sing a note wrong, I hold it and try to adjust it until I am singing it right, and then move onto the next word. I’m gonna sound worse before I sound better. It’s like building a new house for my voice and tearing down the old one. I’m in the process of placing these bricks down one by one, and solidifying it. It’s exciting to see my facial muscles building in a way that completely brightens my face when I sing and talk. I’m starting to look like a much happier person and it’s making me happier inside. It feels so good to be doing this for myself. Can’t wait to see what the next sessions bring! I’m at a point now where I can, with confidence, tell if I’m hitting the note correctly or not.

Before taking this course, I thought that I was somewhat of a decent singer. Within 2 hours of vocal instruction, I noticed I’ve been singing with, at best, 20% of my potential this whole time, and my technique was horrible. It’s like a virus that I have to throw away and disregard.

How can I get anyone to listen to me if my voice carries to the floor?

Case study 2 ( 20 hour complete – vocal course duration)

Megan Stewart - Up and Coming Singer/Songwriter from Barrie, Ontario

I have now completed 20 hours of vocal training and a workshop at Royans Professional Vocal School with Diana Yampolsky. It has taken a lot of focus and determination to get where I am now vocally. This course challenged me in ways that were hard to understand at first. For example, before I even begin singing, Diana has me do speech exercises. This ensures that I use my mouth muscles in a way for maximum amplification and in the least harmful way possible. Work smart, not hard, right? By smiling and engaging certain facial muscles while singing, it allows the voice to come out brighter and fuller, maximizing my instrument. Once this is achieved, we translate that into singing. It’s very difficult to grasp the concept of this. Diana’s fierce instruction pushed me to the next level of understanding, where my voice should rest in the upper palate of my mouth as it comes out. I have a pretty good idea of what I’m doing now, but it’s going to take more practice to get where I want to be vocally. I know what to practice, and how to identify if I’m singing wrong and hurting my throat. I can hear the fullness in my voice when I project properly. I never realized how much I sang with my throat and out of my nose before. It’s a hard habit to break. Even if I were more aware, it’s not like I would have been able to figure out how not to do it by myself. It takes a professional telling you how it’s done.

There is a huge scientific aspect to singing that I’ve been opened up to. I am so grateful for what Diana has done for my voice. Though there were times I may have rolled my eyes at her in frustration, it’s only because she pushed me the way a personal trainer or yoga instructor would. You thank them after, when you feel the results. This has helped my confidence overall as a person, and the way I present myself. This will help my voice last for a life time of music instead of burning out in 10 years. Musician or not, we could all benefit from Vocal Science.

Voice Repair Course Case Study:
“Traci Francis, before becoming a client was diagnosed with nodes on both vocal chords. Immediately one chord underwent laser surgery. To help her singing voice recover from the surgery her doctor recommended vocal coaching for therapy. It was at this time that she became our client. After 15 hours of vocal therapy supplemented with herbal remedies she returned to her doctor for a check up and to prepare for the second laser treatment. Astonishingly, her doctor diagnosed that the node on her other vocal chord had dissolved! There was absolutely no trace left of it! And the second surgery session was unnecessary. To top it off, her singing voice had been enhanced through our involvement. Traci Francis unequivocally endorses our method.”

“Lisa” is a singer from the U.S. who had been having serious voice problems and contacted us via email concerning our Voice Repair Immersion Course. She had recently had a laser and scalpel operation on her vocal nodules and her doctor was recommending that she should have a 2nd operation as her nodules grew back. She was apprehensive about having another operation because of the scarring that occurred in her vocal box. (See right Diagram A.) She flew to us from Massachusetts and our Master Vocal Consultant/Voice Repair Specialist Diana Yampolsky conducted the herbal treatment and her revolutionary instruction for just over a 4 day period. We captured her before instruction/treatment video and videotaped her after 4 days of vocal repair and instruction. The improvement was more than words can describe. Moreover, she came with an acute form of bronchitis but we were able to overcome this obstacle as well. “Lisa” has given us permission to provide her email address to anyone that is seriously considering coming to Toronto for our Voice Repair/Herbal Treatment course.
